The science of eventing: What happens when a horse hits a jump?|
Learning about the forces involved when a horse hits a cross-country obstacle has been among the goals of the first year of the US Eventing Association's Collapsible Fence Study, led by Dr Suzanne Weaver Smith.
"What is happening at the point of contact between the horse and the fence is a big unknown," Smith said. "That's what really has to be understood better in order to have recommendations and requirements enabling new designs of frangible fences."
A big hurdle in the project has been a lack of data on the subject because of the rarity of rotational falls.
