Daizi Plumb & Vetsense - "The Results Speak For Themselves"|
As seen on pages 34, 35 & 36 of the current April Issue of Horse Deals Magazine
When you think of young achievers in the Show Ring 'Daizi Plumb' is a name that instantly springs to mind Daizi is regularly in the winners line-up of Australia's most prestigious Horse Shows and Championships.
To many on the sideline, Daizi may be seen as 'merely' the young jockey to her successful fathers stable of horses, but nothing could be more further from the truth. At only 13 years of age Daizi has long taken the reins in the breaking and training of some of Australia's most successful show ponies that the family have produced.
Not one to shy away from hard work, the pint sized Daizi shows such a unique passion for the industry that she was born into. She regularly rides two ponies each morning before school and several more after school. You will often find Daizi cleaning boxes, feeding out and picking up manure not to mention organizing the days schedule at a busy show on the weekend (someone has to keep Dale on his toes!)
We caught up with Daizi following her recent success with her two homebred ponies at Canberra Royal, where this talented young lady took them from breakers to Royal Show winners in less than a year.
In the September Issue of Horse Deals last year we followed the early breaking and training of DP Lady Di and many would presume that Dale would have been involved in the early riding of this lovely young pony, but this was not the case at all according to Daizi, "Dad really is a bit too big to ride the little ponies, we work together on the ground and then I do all the riding."
Dale also gives us a little insight into the early training of this little mare, "Lady Di was a fantastic pony to work with, her sensible nature (although a green baby) made her a perfect mount for Daizi."
Whilst there are many hours of groundwork and training in the lead up to the first ride, Dale has seen the benefits to using VETSENSE NERVAID Paste prior to Daizi swinging her leg over for the first time, "NERVAID is such a quick and easy paste to administer that we really wouldn't risk Daizi's first ride without it, it just takes that little bit of edge off and we certainly saw that with Lady Di. We just popped her a paste in the morning and by lunchtime we were ready to go!"
Daizi tells us about her first ride on Lady Di. "Dad and I put a lot of ground work in before her first ride. Initially we started off in the stable on the lead. Once she coped ok with that we moved into the round yard where Dad lunged me. I trust my Dad and he gives me confidence in our education and training of our young ponies that we have bred and broken in."
When the duo were ready to leave the round yard, the next progression was the
dressage arena, then finally a ride out. "We familiarised her with the arena which entailed Dad leading me around before we progressed to lunging at a trot and canter. Once we felt confident, Dad took the lunge rein off and we began on a small circle, before progressing to a larger circle onto the arena by ourselves. She was very good and only looked at a couple of things. Her mother was a very forward going pony so we didn't want to put too much pressure on too soon as we wanted her to be very relaxed. Dad always says if they can't walk, trot and canter a circle with their nose in then they are no good."
To prepare Lady Di (& DP Chocolate) for her first show Dale added VETSENSE HEMO Paste to the preparation. Dale explains, "I was keen to try the HEMO Paste as it is a fantastic source of vitamins and minerals for the ponies, plus it really helped to darken their coats. Teamed up with the grooming products, the ponies were looking fantastic!"
Whilst Daizi would have loved to ride Lady Di at her first show, unfortunately it was a school day, "Her first show was Maffra Show, October 28th, which was on a Friday, so Dad had Sabrina Jaeschke ride her there. It is important for us to attend school and not be absent too much with our busy show schedule. She was awarded Champion at Maffra and then I got to ride her at the next four shows where she was Champion at each."
Daizi's other successful pony at Canberra Royal was the very cute, DP Chocolate, who Dale and Daizi broke in in February 2016. "Chocolate and Lady Di are full siblings," explains Daizi, "however, Chocolate can be a little more sensitive but they both have such good temperaments."
Only four months after their first show under saddle, Lady Di & Chocolate were both accepted for Canberra Royal, "I was really excited to take a young team to Canberra with limited showing experience under their belts but it was going to be hard work," continues Daizi. "We made sure there were no dramatic changes to their work as they are worked regularly through the week and it was about getting them more consistent in their work."
"As for grooming, their mane and tails are washed weekly with VETSENSE EquiGLOSS 2 in 1 followed by ElimiNOTS which keeps them tangle free and silky clean. I often sneak some EquiGLOSS 5 in 1 Spray to practice my patterns."
"We left for Canberra on the Tuesday and it took us 9 hours with no stop-overs. We gave the horses some NERVAID Paste before they got onto the truck so they were relaxed while travelling and arrived in a good frame of mind.
"We worked Lady Di on the exercise arena Tuesday night and luckily she doesn't take a lot of work, and as Chocolate was on Friday, I was able to work him on the main arena Thursday night.
When the big day arrived, all of Daizi (and Dale's) hardwork was to be put to the test. "Dad helped me wash Lady Di the night before our first class with the EquiGLOSS 2 in 1. We plaited her the next morning and Dad gave her a dose of NERVAID Paste when he got up.
"She was tacked up and saddled and Dad put the finishing touches on with her make up and patterns using 5 IN 1 EquiGLOSS. We got to the marshalling arena a little early before her class so I was able to ride her around to warm her up.
"It was a quiet morning on the arena and Lady Di was feeling very relaxed, although she is a little horse shy, so I was careful around other horses. We went around the circle and was called in first to workout, luckily the workout was simple and straight forward and she gave me a nice ride and put together a lovely workout for a baby. She was called forward for 1st and I was so proud of her, all my hard work had paid off! Each class she went in she got more confident and I could ask more of her. I was so excited to get best novice at her first Royal and to place 2nd in her Open.
"I also practiced the leading rein with Lady Di at home, and put many hours to ensure she is perfect for the little riders. We were lucky enough to find Annabelle Richardson to take the ride on her the day before. With only a quick practice, Annabelle rode really well to win the Leading Rein class for us. We appreciated Annabelle riding her and doing such a fantastic job on a young pony."
Daizi also had a fantastic show with the homebred DP Chocolate taking out the Novice and the Open Show Hunter Pony 12-12.2hh and going on to claim the Champion Small Show Hunter Pony. "As Chocolate had a led class right before his novice saddle class we didn't want to flatten him. To date, Chocolate hasn't really put a foot wrong so we were reasonably confident that he would work out on the arena and it was just up to the judge as to whether they liked him. Chocolate went in his Novice and put together a safe workout and won his class. We went straight back in for Best Novice and he was awarded Best Novice after a lovely work out for a baby. I asked Dad to give him 15 minutes on the lunge before the Open class which was on the same day, as he wasn't settled, I think as the arena was busier. The rides had started and it was really busy out there. He worked well in his Open and went on to take out Champion Show Hunter from a quality field. I was so happy with him at his first Royal Show."
It goes to show that dedication and hard work, an eye for detail and using the right products in the right way can be a winning formula.
